From the shipyard to the ocean floor

Named R.M.S. Titanic, the ocean liner was built in Belfast by the Harland & Wolff shipyards for the White Star Line. Launched in 1911, it was one of the most luxurious and sophisticated ships of its time: wireless telegraphy, electric elevators, and 16 watertight compartments meant to make it unsinkable.

On April 10, 1912, the Titanic left Southampton on its maiden voyage to New York, carrying more than 2,200 people. On the night of April 14–15, it struck an iceberg and sank in under three hours. With too few lifeboats aboard, more than 1,500 people lost their lives.
